Stevie wrote an article for Rolling Stone recently describing the night she realized Janis Joplin was her hero and great inspiration. While singing with Lindsey Buckingham as the band Fritz, Stevie opened for Janis in San Jose around 1970. The show was running late and Stevie's set ran long. She describes Janis catching her eye on the side of the stage screaming, "What the F are you assholes doing? Get the hell off my stage!" at Stevie and her band.
Stevie explains she was in awe of the deep emotional connection Janis made with her audience along with the soulful edginess Janis brought onstage. She praises Janis for being real and daring to be different in dress and voice. Despite being bitched out that night, Stevie claims Janis inspired her to find her own voice and style.
Some reader comments on the piece are interesting. A few express disappointment at Stevie's reaction, others praise her humor and humility. Read Stevie's full article at Rolling Stone.
